    About Tiny Pixel Editor

    Version

A pixel art studio for drawing, animation and tilemaps, right in your browser.

    Made by idlebydesign.

Links open in a new tab.

HEIC image import uses heic2any ↗.

    Keyboard shortcuts

    Customize a shortcut

Leave blank to unbind. Browser shortcuts and contextual arrows, Tab and Escape cannot be assigned.

    New canvas

Opens in a new tab; your current document stays open.

    1–512 pixels per side.

    New tilemap layer

Adds a layer that paints with tiles from this document’s tileset.

1–128 pixels per side. Use Tilesets and tile tools to create more sets or change tile size.

    Frame duration

How long this frame shows during playback and in exports. 100ms = 10 fps.

    Import sprite sheet

Cells are read left to right, then top to bottom. Partial cells at the edges are ignored.

    Imported

The new tab is the imported file. Anything listed above was not carried over exactly.

    Cel opacity

Changes only this cel's appearance. Linked pixels stay shared.

    New tag

Frame numbering starts at 1. Both the first and last frame are included. “Loop tag” limits playback to the tag under the current frame; Loop or Once controls repetition.

    Resize canvas

Artwork stays centered; pixels outside the new size are cut off.

    1–512 pixels per side.

    Scale image

Resamples your artwork (nearest neighbour) on every layer.

    1–512 pixels per side.

    Scale selection

Resamples the selected pixels (nearest neighbour), centred in place.

    10–800 percent.

    Pen pressure

Applies to normal pencil and eraser strokes from a pen. Mouse and touch use full strength. Filters and shading keep their own controls.

The pencil paints with the selected transparency. The eraser makes existing pixels more transparent. In indexed mode, colours come from the document palette and pixels are either fully opaque or fully transparent.

    Tilesets and tile tools

Each tilemap layer has its own tileset. Tiles copied to another document can be edited independently. You can undo changes made with these tools.

    Tileset

Changing size rebuilds tile IDs from artwork and resets tile names and auto-tile rules. Undo restores them.

Imports copy tiles locally. PNG uses the tile size above; rows are read left to right.

    Tile selection and placement

Coordinates count tiles, starting at zero. Moves clip at the canvas edge. Rotate needs square tiles.

    Selected tile properties and order

    Auto-tiling

Choose which tile to use for each arrangement of neighbouring terrain. Enter 16 output tile IDs for neighbour masks 0–15. North=1, East=2, South=4, West=8. Terrain lists which existing tile IDs belong together; the whole active grid is updated in one undo step.

    Colour and pixels

Grayscale conversion preserves alpha and can be undone. Reference guides keep their colours. Indexed conversion is available in the Canvas menu.

Pixel aspect changes how your artwork looks without changing its pixel dimensions. When exporting, keep the original dimensions or stretch the image to match its appearance.

    Slices and 9-patch

Static canvas guides. Bounds use canvas pixels; centre and pivot are relative to the slice. These guide coordinates stay the same when you transform the artwork.

    Export

PNG keeps transparency. Indexed PNG needs ≤256 colours.

    Palette from image

Adds to My colours (up to 256 saved colours).

    Convert to indexed colour

Every pixel becomes one of the palette colours, and the palette then lives in this document.

    Import palette

    Remap to palette

Repaints every layer using only your palette colours.
